Fishing report by Jim Boyd

ANGLING PRESS SERVICES

JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Tuesday 6 Feb 2018. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 04 February 2018.

1. FRANDY (Gleneagles). NOW CLOSED UNTIL MARCH 2018

2. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The water is still just above freezing and the fish are being caught slowly on a wide variety of flies. This spell of very cold weather has now lasted two months but it will not do any harm to the and hopefully it will kill off the weed. Allan Mitchell from Stirling had 3 fish for 12lbs 8oz – best fish 6lbs 8oz on a Black & Green Fritz, Hector Wilson, Bannockburn, 3 fish for 10lbs 8oz on an Okey Dokey, Colin Clement, Tyndrum, 4 fish for 13lbs 8oz on a White Cat and Robert Wilson from Furnace caught 3 fish weighing 14lbs on a Damsel. Andy Young from Furnace took 4 fish for 18lbs on an Ally, J Horne, Alloa, had a brace for 9lbs 8oz on a Damsel, John Meek, Tullibody, used a Damsel to bag 3 fish for 9lbs 8oz and Manuel Geraldus from Halbeath had 1 for 2lbs 8oz. Jim Jarvie from Larbert had 4 fish for 13lbs on a Pink Blob.

3. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) As usual for February the weather has been very changeable with mild, calm days at one end of the scale and bitterly cold, high winds and ice at the other end. Angling numbers have been average for the time of year and catches have been sporadic rather than steady. However, given the right combination of a reasonable fly fished at the correct depth then some excellent results have been achieved.
On the Boathouse Pool there have been several decent results to catch and release anglers. Jock Leslie returned 14; Mr. Pozzi released 11 and Mr. Burnett released 10. Most fish fell to fairly small flies like the Diawl Bach, Buzzers and even dry flies but small lures also produced results. The Burnside Pool has been moody but on its good days there have been some fine returns. The best fish recently was a superb rainbow taken by Ian Gordon and expertly netted by Damian Warski. It was photographed, returned and estimated at 13lbs. Ian’s best catch comprise twelve rainbows, taken mainly on lures – with depth being the key to success. Other excellent fish have recently included another beautiful rainbow estimate at 12lbs caught by George Birse. In addition to that Frank Sherriff released yet another lovely rainbow weighing 8lbs 12oz which was taken on a Buzzer. Probably the best returns from the Bankside Pool were taken by Kathleen Shepherd’s group of five anglers who fished a variety of flies and methods to catch/return a total of 36 fish.  The Woodside Pool (any legal method) mirrored the fly-only pools with good and bad days. Mr. Snowden took four nice rainbows for a total of 9lbs. Most fish have fallen to float fished Powerbait, although several of the better specimens have been taken on the spinner.

4. MARKLE (East Lothian) NO REPORT THIS WEEK

5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The beginning of the week saw breezy conditions and some dull days with the occasional sleet showers, the water temperature was around 3 degrees, this kept the fish shoaling up the channel between the island and the roadside. Towards the end of the week saw a change in conditions and some brighter days which meant the fish became more widespread and anglers out in the boats and at the dam had good success as well as those fishing from the island. The water is very clear and most catches were recorded on lures such as Dancer, Humungus and Cat either fished on floating, sink tip or intermediate lines around 3 to 5 feet down. The best method was a reasonably quick retrieve though some buzzers and bugs taking static but usually some movement was required. The fishery will still be closing at 4.30pm
