Fishing report by Jim Boyd

ANGLING PRESS SERVICES

JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Tuesday 23 January 2018. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 21 January 2018.

1. FRANDY (Gleneagles). NOW CLOSED UNTIL MARCH 2018

2. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The fishery has been closed for the best part of a week due to the heavy snow and ice but is now likely to be open again. However better to be safe than sorry so, if in any doubt,  a quick call to Elizabeth is recommended.

3. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) NO REPORT THIS WEEK

4. MARKLE (East Lothian) Due to the horrendous weather conditions very few anglers have been turning up but those who braved the elements were well rewarded especially Bruce Hunter from Edinburgh who had 4 fish including specimens of 10lbs 2oz and 8lbs taken on Apps. Also doing well was Geoff Mills from Edinburgh with 3 for 9lbs on a Bloodworm and Shaun McGarry from Edinburgh had 4 on C+R on various small lures.

5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The Fishery remained open all week despite snow and sub-zero temperatures.  The aerators in Swanswater and the Meadow Pond did excellent jobs in keeping the ice at bay.   Those anglers hardy (or foolhardy!) enough to brave the conditions were generally well rewarded with some excellent sport.   Plenty of Browns, up to 7lb, are still being returned and some cracking Golds and Blues are also being caught.    The majority of fish this week were taken on lures such as Cat’s Whisker and Humungus, with Buzzers and Bugs also taking fish.   On Friday, the fish were remarkably active given the cold conditions, but generally they were quite deep and a slow retrieve was the best tactic.  The water remains really clear and the temperature is around 1.5oC. Some excellent bags this week including

Malcolm Miller, Clackmannan, in two visits, 7 for 26lb 2oz including a Gold, plus 13 C&R including 3 Browns, Jim Milne, Alloa, 4 for 15lb 8oz, plus 5 C&R, George Garfoot, Rosneath, 4 for 15lb including 5lb 4oz Rainbow, 2 Golds and a Blue, plus a Brown returned, Jim Harper, Clackmannan, 4 for 13lb 4oz, including 2 Golds, plus a Brown returned and Stanley Franklin, Alva, 4 for 12lb 8oz including a Gold, plus 5 C&R including a Brown. Andy Young and Robert Wilson, Furnace, took 4 each for 21lb plus 3 C&R mostly from the small ponds, in the snowy conditions on Friday, Richard Shinner, Gairloch, 4 for 11lb 8oz including 3 Blues and a Gold, plus 1 C&R, Bill Williams, Alloa, 4 Golds for 9lb 8oz from the small ponds, plus 1 C&R, Jeff Ainsworth, Alloa, 3 for 9lb 8oz including 2 Golds and Stewart Marshall, Cambusbarron, 2 for 8lb 8oz including 5lb 8oz Gold, plus 5 C&R. Eddie McKillop Jnr., Glasgow, 2 for 8lb including a Gold, David Harrison, Alloa, 4lb 11oz Rainbow plus a Brown returned, Donald McMurchy, Fallin, caught and released 7 including 2 Browns and Paul McKenna, caught and released 7.
