Lake of Menteith
Lake Blog 20th June 2017
Secchi disk Clarity 2.5m ; Water Temperature at 6ft 17C.
Anglers are using floaters/sink tip and wets in the bright sunshine and dries if there is cloud cover. Catches have been consistant at the Malling shore to West Gateside. This week we have the longest day of the year so a good time of the year for an evening trip. On Saturday we have the last of our two early morning sessions – with plenty of boats still available.
Scottish Club Championships: Sponsored by Snowbee, Lomond Group, The Lake of Menteith, Keir Hardie Joiner, Fly Tying Scotland and Glencairn Crystal. Heat 7 – 17th June. Saturday night saw 13 teams (39 anglers) in contention with last year’s champions and a previous winner.   Westerly winds saw choppy conditions, and returning day boats had small catch returns, although reporting many trout showing on surface.  As boats moved off, most headed west in direction of Malling Shore, Gateside Bay (Cages Bay) and quieter water at Arnmach Point.  On checking the boats an hour later, some anglers were returning trout, wind was abating, and a show of rising trout was likely for Cages Bay.   At end of the heat 154 trout had been caught with 86 being released. Each returned trout counts as 2 lb in anglers catch return. Top place went to Champions Neilston Fly Fishers with 26 trout for 53lb 1.7 oz. Trio of Brian MacKenzie, James Litster and Tom Burnett mostly fished dry fly at various areas targeting rising trout.  In second place with 22 trout for 48lb 9oz were Caley Liners trio of John Simpson (top rod on night)  Brian and Andrew Kennedy. Third place fell to Perth RASC team of Andy Kemp, Sandy Boag and Grant Sutherland with 18 trout for 39lb 10 oz. These teams to semi final 19th August.
Top five rods progressing to Champions of Champions Final; John Simpson  24 trout, James Litster 20 trout, Andy Kemp 19 trout , Brian MacKenzie 18 trout and Andy Smith with 16 trout. James Litster cannot make final so next place falls to Jordan Queen , Johnstone Fly Fishers with 7 trout for 16lb 9oz.
Best trout on the night was caught by Alex Grant of Select Fly Fishers and weighed in at 4lb 14.7 oz.  Team Captain, angler with best catch and angler catching heaviest trout all received bottles of Loch Lomond Single Malt Whisky. Report by Kenny Miller.

2017 Boat League Sponsored by James Bayne Fishing Tackle Callander and Southside Decoraters.
In Heat 7 of the Boat League, on a grey and calm evening, the 30 anglers netted 92 fish - quite a good evening average. Top bag was Brian MacKenzie who netted 10 from "all over". 2nd top bag was Connor Campbell who was fishing at the Malling Burn and on the Malling Shore with a Di3 and a fab and booby. Ray Harrison sent in this silhouette from last years BBQ.
